for socially conscious filmmaking
April 16, 2010
Father Willy Raymond, CSC, National Director of Family Theater Productions, received the second annual Magis Award from the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress Film Showcase, Friday evening, March 19, at the Anaheim Convention Center.
With support from Loyola Marymount University, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and local production companies, the Magis Award
(pronounced "màh-gis," a Jesuit term meaning "the more") was inaugurated in 2009 to recognize the contributions of artists, producers and supporters of socially conscious filmmaking. Actor Martin Sheen was the inaugural recipient last year.
In accepting the award Father Raymond said: “I would like to thank Loyola Marymount University, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and the organizers of the Religious Education Film Showcase. I humbly accept this award knowing that I receive it in honor of the work of our team at Family Theater Productions.”
The Congress Film Showcase, started in 2007 and coordinated by LMU’s Center for Religion and Spirituality, highlights cinematic works rooted thematically in the Christian narrative tradition, Catholic social teaching, justice, ministry and spirituality. It is held on the first night of the three-day Los Angeles Religious Education Congress that normally draws tens of thousands of catechists to its workshops, general assembly speakers, liturgies and exhibits offering religious goods, supplies and services.
For the third consecutive year Family Theater Productions had an entry in the showcase. This year it was a six-minute clip from
Faith Bowl III, a half-hour, round-table discussion by sports celebrities about the challenges of living the Catholic faith and the challenges to family life amidst the public arena of professional sports. Featuring pro baseball stars Mike Piazza, Mike Sweeney and Bobby Keppel, the program aired on several Catholic television broadcast outlets and networks in conjunction with Super Bowl XLIV, Sunday, Feb. 7.
